Applique, Applique, Applique

I love applique and after reviewing the photos I can see quite a bit of progression. My skills certainly are not perfected, but that is why I called my blog Humble Quilts. They are what they are, and I love them, even if my circles aren't perfect!!
This is a pattern by Pat Sloan- Ma Ma's Garden.

I couldn't find the pattern for this one, but it is one I just finished recently. It is hand appliqued with wool and cotton.
I'm not sure why but I really wasn't happy with this one. It may be the colors, (I love cheddar!)or maybe because it is just too spindly!
Both are machine quilted.

Buttonhole Applique

These are a few older quilts that I fused then buttonhole stitched using black floss. The little angel one was made shortly after I started quilting. I purchased a kit from Keepsakes.
Rise and Shine was in American Patchwork and Quilting. The one on the bottom was in a book by Jan Patek.

All three are hand quilted.

1847 Album Quilt

Made it back from vacation to DC. We had a busy, on-the-go, week of sightseeing. I was getting sick the day before we left and snapped this photo at the American History Museum.

There was a poem in the center written so tiny that I couldn't read it.

Here is what it said about this quilt:

Quilt made by members of the Presbyterian Church, Maltaville, New York, 1847

This album quilt was presented to Mary Benton Barnard Hill, wife of the pastor of the Presbyterian Church, as a "token of esteem." Each square was made by a different seamstress, and many are signed. The Smithsonian acquired the quilt in 1931.

If you have read any of this blog you know I am enamoured with vintage and old quilts. I don't know what draws me to them, whether it is their imperfections, or the unknown history or maker. I think it's a mix. Here are some photos of some old quilts for sale during the Sisters Outdoor Quilt show. This was a vendor that is there every year set up to sell. I think they do pretty brisk business.

The Harrisburg quilt show was on our way from Ohio to Lancaster and we were able to have a look at some great quilts and take a lecture on scrap quilts by Pepper Cory. Here is a display of old four block quilts. I just love this style of quilt and the quilting itself is usually outta this world!

President's Quilts

I'm not only a lover of quilts but most any kind of textile. I picked this up for about a dollar. Someone put a lot of time and love into this.

30s Reproduction Bow Tie

This was my first attempt at making a quilt with reproduction prints. I did all the bow-ties with a set in seam. It was also my first and only time at doing prairie points. Pieced and handquilted in 1994.

Girls Weekend Out

I had a great weekend away with my girlfriends Randy and Bonnie. It was a great time to sew, laugh and unwind. Here are 2 projects that I worked on.
I had the center of this done, but was able to get the borders made and applied. Not rocket science here for sure, but I love it!
My plan for this was to have the pieces cut and use it for a leader/ender project. I hadn't gotten far enough to put that into use, so I just threw what I had into a baggie and a few other fabrics and completed some of these. It is a simple quilt that will help me use up my scraps.

Log Cabin

Last April we were helping my mom clean out a storage shed and her house for a yard sale and I found this quilt. She doesn't remember where it came from and I didn't remember seeing it before either. It is very worn and I am hoping to fix it up a bit so it can be out.

After I took it home I was looking through some old photos and saw this quilt in a photo that was taken at the ranch house where my mom and step dad used to live. I am guessing it was my step dad's first wife's quilt.

The borders are in bad shape. I'm thinking of just trimming most of the border off and then applying some binding. Any other ideas?

Classic Colors

I love pink and brown quilts! This one is fairly worn, but beautiful to me just as it is.

Sisters Quilt 2008

Here's a simple quilt I picked up last July at a vendor during the Sisters Show. I took quite a few photos of the quilts, but could only afford one!

I love the stripes of the backing.

Silk and Poly Vintage Quilt

Here's a small quilt I picked up at a yard sale for a couple of bucks. I don't know much about these types fabrics- I'm not sure there is one cotton in there. It's pretty primitive but it perks up a side table in our guest bedroom. For me, knowing somebody put their time and love into this makes me appreciate its beauty.

The Humble Nine Patch

I love nine patch quilts! New or old there is something classic about a nine patch.

There isn't much square about this quilt, but isn't that striped border adorable?

Double Wedding Ring

I believe this is one of the first vintage quilts I purchased. Double wedding ring made in the 30's- talk about a classic!

Liberty Garden Quilt

Here's a recently finished wall hanging. The pattern was by Jan Patek, but as you can see from the crummy photo below it was inspired by this antique medallion quilt. I love to re-create old quilts, but my drawing skills are bad, so I'll let the designers make the patterns for the applique ones.
